A diamond's clarity is determined by how free it is from blemishes & inclusions.
Blemishes are external - scratches, small nicks etc. Inclusions are internal -
foreign minerals inside a diamond (including another diamond crystal), feathers
(breaks), growth distortions etc. Nature makes nothing absolutely perfect or pure.
But under 10x magnification (the power diamonds are graded under) there are diamonds
that a trained grader cannot see either inclusions or blemishes. These are the
high prized flawless diamonds. At the other end of the spectrum, are the imperfect
stones that contain blemishes and/or inclusions that are eye-visible & can
often affect durability. Between these two extremes, are diamonds with inclusions
and/or blemishes that range anywhere from extremely difficult to very easy to
see with 10x magnification.
